Annual Events

We would like to introduce you our annual major events here.
In Japan, the academic year starts in April and ends in March of the following year.

Opening Ceremony

We have an opening ceremony in the beginning of April.

This ceremony is to welcome students who enter elementary or junior high school.
Parents and many guests attend the ceremony.

We welcomed eight grade 1 students and one grade 7student this year. Because of them the number of students in Karachi Japanese School has increased remarkably.

The Tanabata Festival (summer festival)

We have the Tanabata festival in July. We practice dancing, singing, playing music, etccc for our concert. As well as this, we have stalls for food and games. At the end of the festival, we dance Japanese folk dances with all our guests.

This event is successful because of the effort of all of us, students, teachers, and parents. Also many other people of the Japanese community in Karachi cooperate with us.

Watching Sea Turtles

Many turtles come to Sandspit Beach to lay eggs between September and November.Sandspit Beach is a very important place where sea turtles can lay eggs peacefully. Nowadays, the number of sea turtles has been decreasing.

We also clean up the beach beforehand to protect the sea turtles. Quite often the turtles eat plastic bags as they look like jerry fish and this causes their death. Through this event, we can learn how important life is.

School  Trip

The older students of KJS go on a school trip in Pakistan in autumn. We visit Islamabad, Lahore, Swat, and other places by plane and mini bus.

We went to Islamabad last year. We visited the Shah Faisal mosque had an exchange program with Islamabad Japanese School.
We went to the historic city of Taxila and the resort town of Murree where we enjoyed horse riding. We learned and enjoyed a lot in our school trip.

While the upper grades go on a trip, the lower grades visit some factories and museums in Karachi.

Sports Day

We have Sports Day in November. All members of the Japanese Association are involved in it. We are divided into red and white teams, and compete for victory. We have many games like relay, Tamaire (throwing balls), jumping rope, tug of war, etc....At the end, the winning team gets a prize. So we have to cooperate with other members.
Itfs one of the most exciting events in the year for the students.

Research Presentation

We have the Research Presentation in December. About two months before, we choose the topic of our research which is something about Karachi, Pakistan. Then we start to examine it. We have to do it independently not with anybody else. Itfs very interesting that there are many topics and we can discover and learn more and more about Karachi and Pakistan. Through this project, we improve our ability to answer questions.

Rice Cake Making

Have you ever eaten rice cake? In Japan, we eat rice cakes for New Yearfs Day. In fact we make Rice Cakes and serve them to everybody when we have any celebration. We pound cooked rice with a mortar and mallet, then form it into round cakes. There are toppings of many different flavors, soy sauce, soybean flour and so on. Even though we are in Pakistan, we can still eat Japanese delicacies. How happy we are!

Flying Kites

We fly kites in February. This event is organized by the parents. We draw a picture on the kite and construct it. We fly our own kites with cute pictures in the sky at Clifton beach. We also fly Pakistani kites. It is very difficult to handle kites, because kites are delicate in a strong wind. We have to handle them skillfully. It is a lot of fun for us!

Graduation Ceremony

We have a Graduation Ceremony in March, the end of the academic year. This ceremony is to celebrate students who graduate from elementary and junior high school. And we have to say good bye to them. We present thanks and sing a song with them. After this ceremony, we have a farewell ceremony for students and teachers who go back to Japan.
These ceremonies make us sad, but we can get over them when the new term comes and school start.
